This annual is widespread in eastern North America, usually in woods on damp fertile soils, but it is less common on the southeastern Coastal Plain; 2n = 24, 26 (FNA 3). Gm noted in 1914: "another obscure plant found in odd corners about premises, but easily got rid of."
