ALI: no HAB: 9,10, ::::, A, 6 ABU: g9, s2, -6
This minute carnivorous plant ranges from South America (Uruguay) to the southeastern state, where it occurs mostly on seasonally damp sandy soils (W). Plants can be annuals, biennials or short-lived perennials; in Ky plants mostly germinate during Aug-Nov and are biennial or perennial (Krupa 2019). The single known Ky. population was discovered during the 1970s by W. Meijer and students. Although this site at "Hazel Dell Meadow" (PULA) has been acquired by The Nature Conservancy, D. brevifolia and several other rare species here could now become threatened with lack of appropriate disturbance around the population, which cover only about 1 ha. It is likely that browsing and burning were important for maintenance before settlement; a nearby region of northern PULA and western ROCK was mapped as "glades" by Munsell (1818), with a road through it (approximating modern KY 39). During the 1960s to 1970s, the meadow was used as a Go-Kart racetrack. Some fire has been prescribed but long-term plans renain uncertain. Krupa et al. (2021) have recently shown that soi disturbnce by burrowing crayfish at this site is a major factor in the maintenance of Drosera. The crayfish here is probably Cambarus batchi, which is globally restricted to damp flats in or near the southeastern Knobs region or Ky.
