Vitaceae Parthenocissus quinquefolia
Parthenocissus quinquefolia (L.) Planch.
ALI: no HAB: 7,5,11,4, n/a, D, 3 ABU: g10, s10, -2
This is a widespread variable eastern species, but segregates are generally not recognized (FNA 12). Colls. from KENT and WEBS (KNK) have been referred to the closely related P. inserta (Kerner) Fritsch (erroneously known as P. vitacea (Knerr) A.S. Hitchc.), but these colls. are not clearly distinct. P. inserta is a widespread northern and western species that is unknown as a wild plant in Ky. but reported from close to the border in Ill., Ind. and Ohio (K). It is widely cultivated, and further investigation of potential escapes is needed. The inflorescence of inserta is corymbiform (versus paniculiform), with larger berries (8-12 mm wide versus 5-8 mm); its tendrils are less branched, usually lacking adhesive discs; and its leaves are more glossy (FNA 12, W).
