This taxon occurs in the lower Mississippi Valley. Distinction from septentrionalis is tentative in some colls. from Ky. It may be better treated as var. arkansanas (Fern.) Steyermark & Kucera; both are probably tetraploids with 2n = 40 (FNA 24).
