Nyssaceae [Cornaceae] Nyssa aquatica (uniflora)
Nyssa aquatica L.
ALI: no HAB: 3,9, ~, C, 3 ABU: g8, s5, -3
This southeastern tree is known only from sloughs near larger rivers in or near the Mississippian Embayment. Gm's reports from the Mississippian Plateau in TODD and WARR are dubious. However, further south the species is known from other disjunct sites in south-central Tenn. (Ch). Without its distinctively larger fruits (ca. 20-30 mm long versus 8-12 mm) or more clustered staminate flowers (sessile in heads (versus stalked in short racemes or umbellate clusters), trees can sometimes be difficult to distinguish from sylvatica (Y, W). However, leaf blades tend to be larger (mostly 10-30 x 5-12 cm versus 4-15 x 3-6 cm), with longer petioles (3-6 cm versus 0.5-2 cm); and often with a few irregular teeth, typically located near the widest part (versus rarely with a few irregular teeth, typically towards the apex).
