This name has been applied in Ky. (e.g. Clark & Bauer 2001; see also M), but no known colls. can be identified as flabellata in its original narrow sense (F, Gl). In that sense, it has a northern range and extends down the southern Appalachians only at higher elevations, seeming unlikely in Ky. (HFG, W). The few records are most likely referable to macrosperma, which has been combined with iracunda and several other species into a much broader concept of flabellata by Cr and others. C. flabellata may be distinguished from macrosperma and iracunda (F, Gl, FNA 9) primarily by its "flowering corymbs more or less villous" (versus glabrous); also leaves are dark glossy green, ovate to broadly elliptic, cuneate at the base, and with deep acuminate lobes (FNA 9). The species is reportedly a triploid that may have originated from hybridization of macrosperma with chrysocarpa (FNA 9). Further research is needed, using the full range of potential characters.
