This is a widespread variable southeastern species that occurs in woods on damp or dry base-rich soils (FNA 23; Y, W). C. oxylepis can be confused with gracillima or davisii, and a few outlying records remain uncertain. Records of var. pubescens are included here, but see notes under that name.
