Mapping here is tentative, and several records should probably be transferred to other taxa after further study. In its strict sense, this eastern species of damp fertile meadows and riparian zones is considered to have originated in midwestern regions, and it may be somewhat adventive to the south and east (Pennell 1935; Sm, F, W). It has also been widely planted or sown in "wildflower" seed-mixes; digitalis is generally a persistent perennial in grassland plantings. P. digitalis has been combined with alluviorum by some authors, and colls. generally need checking; see notes under alluviorum. Compared to calycosus and laevigatus, the digitalis-alluviorum-deamii group typically has more hairy anthers (versus glabrous to papillose), pure white corollas externally, although sometimes tinged with lavendar (versus usually pale violet or purplish), sepals ovate with acuminate tips (versus ovate-lanceolate to linear-attenuate) and often distinctly scarious-margined (at least in digitalis), more glandular hairs in inflorescences, and less pubescence on leaves (glabrous except for midrib) and stems (usually glabrous). Some atypical colls. mapped here from LAWR, LEWI (KNK) and elsewhere have short-pubescent stems, suggesting transitions to calycosus or laevigatus. Moreover, several colls. mapped here may be treated better as a relatively smooth variant of calycosus. In Tenn., truly native digitalis appears largely restricted to Appalachian regions (APSC, TENN), according to D. Estes (Ch+ and pers. comm.).
