This circumboreal species is widespread across northeastern states and adjacent Canada, usually on wet sites of varied type. In Ky. it is known only from a few sites in Appalachian regions or nearby, usually on old mines, quarry-floors and roadcuts. All records have been made after 1970; the species may well be adventive. It has declined or disappeared at some sites as the vegetation recovers after disturbance.
