This extremely slender, densely tufted sedge is widely distributed over east-central and northern states but largely restricted to calcareous substrates. In Ky. it occurs mostly on xeric, thinly wooded ledges on limestone cliffs along the western edge of the Appalachian Plateaus, and along the Kentucky River Palisades. Juniperus virginiana is consistently present.
