Carex canescens L.
ALI: no HAB: 6,9, n/a, A?, 3? ABU: g10, s0, -5
This is a widespread circumboreal species of boggy habitats that is currently known from 50-75 miles of the state line in Ohio, W.Va. and Va. (K). There is a old coll. from BOYD (at Field) that has been remarkably neglected until now: D. Demaree #11334, 13 May 1935, meandering stream banks, Ashland; "ex. Herbarium of F.J. Hermann". It is probably referable to the eastern North American ssp. disjuncta (Fernald) Toivonen. The coll. was rediscovered in 2016 by M. Brock during diligent search of new databases (SERNEC). The closely related circumboreal species, C. brunnesens (Pers.). Poir is actually more likely to occur in Ky., since it is still locally frequent in the mountains of e. Va. and w. Tenn., and that species is less restricted to acid boggy soils (FNA 23).
