This monotypic genus (or with a few recenty described species) is a widely scattered weed on rich soils in east-central states, but it is usually infrequent. The plant is occasionally cultivated for ornamental or herbal use, but records mapped here are generally from roadsides or similar sites. The earliest known coll. from Ky was made in 1871, and most records date from 1940-1980. There are almost no records dated from after 1980, and the species would appear to have declined. Plants ihave diverse chemistry with culinary, nutraceutical, medicinal and toxicological uses: glycisdes, steroids, alkaloids (Gupta et al. 2014). Plants can sicken or kill livestock (Cohen 1970, Muthee et al. 2011). Hypothetically, it may have been associated with sheep when these were more widely raised across the state.
