Salicaceae Salix <Protitea> amygdaloides
Salix amygdaloides Anderss.
ALI: no HAB: 1,9,2?, n/a, E?, 4 ABU: g9, s1?, -6
This is widespread across central North America, and extends east into the Great Lakes area. The only Ky. records are a 1930s coll. of E.J. Palmer (#16502) from BALL (MO, US), and a 1982 coll. of T. Heineke (#2994) from FULT (BEREA, ?SIU) . Reports from central Ky. have been based on misidentifications of alba x pentandra (X ehrhartiana C. Mey.); see Argus (1986) and M for details. S. amygdaloides is simillar to caroliniana but differs in its generally broader leaves: mostly 2.5-3.5 cm wide (versus 1-2.5 cm) with l/w = ca. 3-6 (versus 5-10). Also, its shoots are glabrous (versus partially villous to tomentose), but upper leaf surfaces tend to be less glossy and often stomatous (versus strictly hypostomatous). Stigmas are usually longer (0.24-4 mm versus 0.16-0.28 mm), and ovaries usually have more ovules (16-18 versus 12-16).
