This ranges widely over eastern and central North America, and it occurs in more open, stressed or disturbed habitats than pallida. Forms with unusual flower colors have been reported in other states (e.g. F, Y), but are unknown in Ky. Across east-central states, stems and leaves usually lack glaucous bloom, in contrast to pallida. However, glaucous bloom is sometimes present in more northern regions.
