Garner et al. (2022) have recently indicated from analysis of DNA that P. pilosa sensu lato is probably composed of at least two distinct clades: a largely southern group including basionyms pilosa and ozarkana; a largely northern group including deamii and fulgida. However, the diagnostic morphology and appropriate nomenclature for these two groups remain obscure, but the southern group is generally more glandular. Some robust plants of the southern pilosa complex from central Tenn. are referable to var. ozarkana Wherry (at least Kral #42847 at GH), with relatively broad subcordate upper leaves and more robust glandular stems, sometimes branched (St, Ch, W). St stated that ozarkana has relatively early flowers with strong fragrance. That Ozark-centered taxon may also occur in w. Ky.; some colls. from CALL and TRIG are suggestive of it (APSC). It is possible that some relatively robust plants here are distinct tetraploids, as found further west, but more analysis is needed (Worcester et al. 2012).
