This is a biennial or short-lived perennial (with basal offsets) that is widespread in eastern states, except for parts of New England. Although the species is relatively uniform within Ky., there are several segregates across its whole range; 2n = 38 and 57. Flowering dates range from Jul to Nov within the state. Var. triloba is largely absent from Appalachian regions within the state, except along low roads with calcareous gravel.
