This is the common ornamental "tulip", abundantly grown in Ky. and in other eastern states but rarely escaped (K, W). It has a complex hybrid origin from T. sylvestris L. and other Eurasian species, and there are many cultivars (FNA 26). There are virtually no definitive reports of spontaneous establishment from seed in North America. Plants are sometimes stoloniferous, but their failure to persist may be partly attributed by herbivory of bulbs by squirrels, chipmunks and other mamnals. Deer are reported to browse intensively on flowering shoots. Bulbs can even be processed for relatively safe human consumption. However, there are many reports of toxicity to some mammals, especially cats; toxins include lectins and glucosides. Definitive information on edibility and toxicity remains somewhat elusive (https://www.poison.org/articles/tulip-bulb-toxicity-191).
