This occurs from Central America to southeastern states, and north into much of the Ohio Valley. It tends to grow on drier sites than virginicus, generally with less intense agricultural history, but the two species are often intermixed. The valid name may still be A. elliotii Chapman, according to Ward (2004b; W).
