This diploid from the Mediterranean region was widely used across eastern states as rootstock for other cherries during the 19th Century. Also, its unusually perfumed flowers and spiced seeds have various uses. In Ky. it has persisted locally and escaped from seed, mostly on dry, rocky calcareous slopes of the Bluegrass region.
