Lunaria annua L.
ALI: EU HAB: F-10, ::?, E?, 6? ABU: n/a, n/a, 5
This curious widely grown ornamental ("honesty") occasionally escapes, but it does not appear to have become widely naturalized in eastern North America (Al-Shehbaz 1987; K). In Ky. it has been observed spreading away from gardens in BRAC, CAMP (KNK), JEFF (EKY) and elsewhere. Some plants have spread into nearby woodland. Flowers are mostly purple but often mixed with white plants. Although Lunaria is generally considered just annual or biennial, there are perennial tuberous taxa that are commonly grown in Europe and may be expected to escape and persist in North America (K; Grey-Wilson & King 2023). These include L. annua ssp. pachyrrhiza (Borb as) Maire & Petitm. Leaves and roots have been used for food nd medicine by humans in Europe (Petrović et al. 2025).
