Reports of virginica from Ky. (Gaddy 1987; FNA 3) appear to have been associated with a broader concept of the species, which was somewhat confused with heterophylla and contracta (M). H. virginica in its narrow sense occurs mostly in the central Appalachians, Piedmont and eastern Coastal Plain of N.C. and Va.,, with limited extensions to Md. and perhaps W.Va. (K). There are no known colls. of typical virginica from Ky., though some heterophylla may appear transitional (Abbott et al. 2004). Typical virginica differs from heterophylla and its close relatives as follows (W): calyx tube cylindrical to narrowly cylindro-urceolate (versus cylindrical); calyx lobes 2-4 mm long (versus 4-15 mm), erect to slightly spreading (versus moderately spreading to reflexed).
