Rosaceae <Spiraeeae> Spiraea alba (var. a.)
Spiraea alba Du Roi
ALI: no HAB: 1,9, n/a, C?, 5 ABU: g10, s2, -3
This northern species has been documented at only two native sites, near opposite extremes of the state: (1) a swampy meadow in BALL (colls. of R. Athey at EKU, TENN), where it cannot be relocated; (2) a rocky riverbank seep in PIKE (KY), where a small piece has been taken for cultivation by JC. There is also a record CARR (LO), but in the lawn of a residence and thus perhaps cultivated; however, the species is known from adjacent Jefferson Co., Ind. (K). And there is an 1840 coll. of Short from Ky. in general (CM). These plants are probably all typical alba, not var. latifolia (Ait.) Dippel, which is a more robust weedy eastern segregate that may deserve species status (W).
