This Japanese species is occasionally cultivated, especially the double-flowered form known as "California rose." It has been reported as escaped in FRAN, but may not be truly naturalized (Wharton & Barbour 1991; J). The correct name has been uncertain, but may now be resolved (W; Spaulding 2013b).
