Ranunculaceae <?Actaeeae> Eranthis hyemalis
Eranthis hyemalis (L.) Salisb.
ALI: EU HAB: 5,7, n/a, D?, 1 ABU: n/a, n/a, 4
This spring ephemeral ("winter-aconite") is widely cultivated due to its showy yellow flowers, above dissected leaves. It has slowly become naturalized at several wooded sites across east-central states, especially in suburban areas and associated parks (FNA 3). It has become locally abundant in JEFF (M. Medley #19934-94 for WKY) and probably in old wooded gardens elsewhere in the state. Flowering dates in east-central states are mostly mid-February to late March. The unusual chemistry of Eranthis includes toxic cardiac glycosides (Da-Cheng et al. 2015), notably bufadienolides that are also produced by toads, and a lectin that inhibits protein synthesis (Kumar et al. 1993).
