Brassicaceae A <Cardamineae> Dentaria [Cardamine] multifida (heterophylla var. m.; C. dissecta)
Dentaria multifida Muhl. ex Ell.
ALI: no HAB: 5,7, n/a, D, 1 ABU: g8, s8, -2
This variable polyploid (2n = 8 x 8, 14 x 8) has a fragmented range, mostly in c. Ala., nw. Ga., Tenn. and sc. Ky. (Al-Shehbaz 1988), but extending east to N.C. and Va. (W). The plants in GRNP are part of disjunct clusters in se. Ind., sc. Ohio and perhaps sw. W.Va. In Ky. there appear to be rare hybrids with heterophylla (e.g. a coll. of B from WAYN), perhaps laciniata and other species. D. multifida differs from all other Dentarias in east-central states as follows (W, Y): plants entirely glabrous, including on the leaf margins (versus with hairs on leaf margins and often also on stems, petioles and inflorescence); leaves highly dissected into linear to filiform segments (versus entire, toothed, or deeply lobed segments), the cauline leaves biternate (versus irregularly 3-11-foliate).. Plants with fewer leaf segments in c. Ala. have been segregated as Cardamine furcata Small; see W for notes.
