This tuberous perennial is a widespread, variable eastern species (2n = 8 x 8, 10 x 8, 12 x 8). There has been uncertainty about whether it should be renamed C. rhomboidea (Pers.) DC. (as reviewed by Y and W). See also notes under douglassii.
