This subshrub (resembling a dwarf willow) is widespread across southern states, but virtually unknown in the central Mississippi and Ohio Valleys (K). Its habitat is "longleaf pine sandhills, dryish Coastal Plain woodlands, other dry woodlands" (W). Rafinesque (1833) reported a "Stillingia montana" from Ky., and Short (1840) reported "Styllingia sylvatica, rare--barrens of Kentucky." Until 2024, no colls. had been located to link with these mysterious reports. Thanks to M. Brock's recent internet searching, a coll. by Short has finally appeared at WIS; it was deteremined as "Styllingia sylvatica" on his printedf label "C.W. Short, M.D., Kentucky 1840". This records is tentatively mapped here in CHRI, since we know that he was lived in Hopkinsville at that time. Other plants (listed here with modern names) that were labelled as from "barrens" of Ky. among his 1840 colls. include the following (SERNEC 2024): Agrostis elliottiana, Andropogon gerardii, Angelica venenosa, Castilleja coccinea, Cypripedium candidum, Dalea candida, Delphinium carolinianum, Echinacea simulata, Gentiana quinquefolia, Isanthus brachiatus, Nabalus asper, Phlox amoena, Physostegia intermedia, Salix occidentalis, Salvia urticifolia, Trillium recurvatum, Tripsacum dactyloides, Verbesina helianthoides, Vicia caroliniana.
