Asteraceae <Eupatorieae> Eupatorium <Uncasia> rotundifolium (var. r.)
Eupatorium rotundifolium L.
ALI: no HAB: 9,10, n/a, B, 5 ABU: g9, s5?, -3
This taxon has been redefined in recent decades as a southeastern species that includes sexual diploids (2n = 20) restricted to Ga. and Fla., plus apomictic polyploids (2n = 30) that extend north at least to Ark., Tenn. and Va. (FNA 21). Further research is needed into distinction and distribution of taxa within the rotundifolia group. Some colls. of pubescens from Ky. (as also noted by B) suggest transitions to typical rotundifolium, especially in southeastern counties (MCRE, WAYN, WHIT). Upper leaves in stressed plants of pubescens may resemble lower leaves of rotundifolium. Although typical rotundifolium has been reported widely from Ky. by several authors (M, W, FNA 21), verified colls. have been located only from the LBL area: CALL (MU), LYON (APSC) and TRIG (APSC). Following W, rotundifolium sensu stricto differs from pubescens as follows: leaves with L/W mostly 1-1.5 (versus 1.5-2), tending to be obtuse (versus acute), the teeth generally rounded (versus sharp), the principal pair of lateral veins diverging directly from the base of the midrib (versus 2-10 mm above base).
