This variable species is widely distributed on acid soils in Appalachian and northeastern regions; however, only triploids have been reported in the whole series (FNA 9). Included here are records of C. neobushii Sarg. (a largely Ozarkian segregate with small fruits and pinkish anthers), C. straminea Beadle (with yellowish fruit and pinkish anthers), C. buckleyi Beadle (Cr, M), and C. biltmoreana Beadle (= C. intricata of Egglest. non Lange). The latter is a pubescent form, also supposedly with more foliaceous bracts, that has been recently treated as a variety of intricata by Lance (2006, 2011, 2014; see also W). It is widely reported from across more eastern states, but not yet determined in Ky. except perhaps for a recent coll. from NICH (JC for KY). Lance (2014) has treated most of these taxa as varieties of intricata, along with boyntonii and rubella; but J.B. Phipps (in FNA 9) has treated some of them as full species.
