This is widely distributed in midwestern regions from s. Minn. to e. Texas, but it is uncommon to rare in disjunct populations east of the Mississippi Rv, from Ohio to Ala. It has been found in some counties of s Ill. and s. Ind. that are adjacent to Ky, also in c. Ohio and c. Tenn. It appears to have been associated with tall grasslands on damp base-rich soils that are now generally converted to farmland. No colls. from Ky. have been located, but there are old reports by Rafinesque (1820, 1824) from "the knob hills of Ky."; by Greenwell (1935, Gunn 1968b) from NELS; by Cr and FNA 20. The description of Rafinesque (under "Cacalia paniculata") does indicate A. plantagineum. However, M. Brock (pers. comm.) has recently determined that the R.A. Greenwell coll. at WIS (from "damp woods, St. Ann's Spring, Nazareth" on 7 Oct 1933) is a non-flowering plant of Hackelia virginiana.
