This slender mycotrophic annual is widely scattered across eastern North America but largely restricted to seasonally wet open areas on strongly acid boggy soils. It appears to intergrade with paniculata at the Hazel Dell site in PULA, and occasional intermediates are reported from other states (Gillett 1959); 2n = 52 in both species.
