This largely midwestern species is closely related to the southeastern mutica, which has often been confused. Hybrids are not reported but may be expected; 2n = 18 in both species (as in most Melica). Their ranges overlap somewhat, especially in Ky., where nitens is much less common and restricted to more open base-rich slopes above cliffs and along glade margins.
