Fabaceae <F-Fabeae> Vicia <Cracca> dasycarpa (villosa ssp. varia*)
Vicia dasycarpa Ten.
ALI: EU HAB: F-10,8, ::?, D, 5 ABU: n/a, n/a, 6
There has been confusion with typical villosa, which is more hairy, but some taxonomic recognition is justified (Cr, W, Y). V. dasycarpa reportedly differs as follows: lower calyx lobe lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, mostly 1-3 mm long (versus more acicular, mostly 3-4 mm); leaflets 2-4 mm wide (versus 3-6 mm); plants glabrate or with pubescence of incurved or loosely appressed hairs < 1 mm long (versus conspicuously villous with spreading 1-2 mm hairs). Compared to villosa sensu stricto, dasycarpa appears concentrated in warmer regions of North America (F, K, W). It may not have been widespread in Ky, until the 1980s (M), but it is now much more frequent than typical villosa. Some records mapped here probably come directly from fresh plantings, but populations can persist for many years through subsequent changes in management, especially along fencerows.
