Crassulaceae Hylotelephium [Sedum*] telephium {sensu lato}
Hylotelephium telephium (L.) H. Ohba
ALI: EU HAB: n/a, n/a, n/a, 4 ABU: n/a, n/a, 0
This cultivated Eurasian species occasionally escapes, especially on floodplains, but it does not seem to be persistent. Woods & Fuller (1988) reported it from CALL (MUR), and there may be a coll. under "telephioides" from MARS (R. Athey 1555); see also Heineke (1987) for a possible record from FULT (M). Under Sedum, these plants have generally been referred to the European ssp. purpureum (L.) Schinz & R. Keller, but the somewhat indistinct Asian ssp. alboroseum (Baker) Frod. is also expected. The latter reportedly has higher chromosome numbers (2n = 48 or 56 versus mostly 36) and may be better treated as H. erythostichum (Miq.) H. Ohba; see Y and FNA 8 for details. It has white to greenish flowers (versus pink-purple to red), which are often infertile or with less than full complement of 10 stamens and 5 pistils (then perhaps of hybrid origin); cymes are lax (versus dense); leaves are little reduced up the stem (versus markedly smaller). Flowering is usually in Aug-Oct; telephium and telephioides flower mostly in Jun-Aug. These two taxa may be difficult to distinguish.
