Most plants from central Ky. that have been has been called H. americana may be referable to this taxon but it has not been generally recognized in treatments until now. The name is provisionally adopted here, based on recent analysis of Engle-Wrye & Folk (2026), but only for the segregate they mapped as "var. brevipetala (North)", which occurs mostly in the upper Ohio Rv. watershed of Ky., Ill., Ind., Ohio, W,Va and Pa. See also notes on their "(South)" segregate under H. cf. hirsuticaulis. They stated: "Heuchera americana var. brevipetala has the longest median stamen lengths (3.85 mm) of H. americana, and differs from H. americana var. americana primarily in having upper laminar hairs up to 1.5 mm (Fig. 8). fastSTRUCTURE suggests that H. americana var. brevipetala has many pure individuals (pink and brown [north and south respectively] in Figs. 2, 9) but a majority of individuals are of mixed assignment or shared assignment with Heuchera ×hirsuticaulis (brown and red, Fig. 2) and H. fumosimontana (pale blue, Fig. 2)."
