This poorly understood taxon appears tio have a somewhat fragmented southeastern range, with concentrations on coastal sands (often "with abundant shell-hash") and on relatively dry calcareous soils, including c. Tenn. and the Ouachita Mts. of Ark. (Essig 1990; Ch, FNA 3, K, W). It is similar to the more widespread eastern species, virginiana, and has probably been overlooked in c. Ky. (D. Estes, pers. comm.). The two species have been combined in some treatments, including St and RAB, However, Essig (1990) indicated that distinct speies status was justified. C. catesbyana differs in its more divided, pinnate to bipinnate leaves, with (3 )5-7 distinct ,few-toothed leaflets (versus only 3, coarsely dentate), with petiole about 1/3 length of whole leaf (versus 1/2); and in its less numerous carpels per flower (18-35 versus 40-60). Also, flowering tends to be earlier: early Jul to early Aug in east-central states; versus early Aug to early Sep (Essig 1990). The only accessed and verified Ky. Colls. may be from ?CLIN (M. Gorton #544 & 896 at EKY), ESTI (D. Estes #10692 at APSC & BEREA) and WARR (K. Nicely & Gough #3069 at NCSC, NCU & WKY); identification of the CLIN colls. and some iNaturalist records remains tentative.
