Asteraceae <Heliantheae> Rudbeckia grandiflora* var. alismifolia
Rudbeckia grandiflora (D. Don) J.F. Gmel. ex DC. var. alismifolia (Torr. & Gray) Cronq.
ALI: s HAB: 10,9, n/a, C?, 5 ABU: g8, s1, -5
This species mostly occurs from e. Texas to c. Mo. (K). Var. grandiflora is largely Ozarkian (FNA 21), but it may be native in some disjunct localities as far north as Ill. (prairie remnant near Chicago), Ohio ("weedy dump" in Cuyahoga) and Ont., also east to nw. Ga. (native grassland in Catoosa Co.); see FNA 21, SERNEC and W.. Var. alismifolia, which appears to differ only in its lack of pubescence, occurs mostly on the Gulf Coastal Plain, west of the Mississippi Rv. It is also known from two old colls. in JEFF (DHL), which could have been native or adventive: P.A. Davies #743/748, 2/4 Aug 1943, uncultivated field/dry hillside, Illinois Avenue. Other colls. of rare or conservative species by Davies from this locality included Helianthus mollis and Tripsacum dactyloides; and nearby along, Poplar Level Road, Aristida ramosissima, Silphium integrifolium, S. laciniatum and Spiraea tomentosa (DHL). Thus it appears that JEFF had remnants of tall native grassland on seasonally here with southern affinities. Recently, there has also been a report of grandiflora from the Fort Knox area in HARD (A. Mattingly pers. comm. to NP in Sep 2022)..
