Colchicaceae [Uvulariaceae*, Liliaceae] Uvularia grandiflora
Uvularia grandiflora Sm.
ALI: no HAB: 5, n/a, D, 1 ABU: g9, s9, -3
This occurs mostly in mesic woods on base-rich soils in eastern states, except the southeastern Coastal Plain. Compared to perfoliata (FNA 26), grandiflora has leaves minutely pubescent on veins below (versus glabrous) but flowers smooth within (versus granular-pubescent). Also, there is usually just one leaf below the lowest branch (versus 2-4). Flowers are usually deep orange-yellow (versus paler stramineous yellow, and capsules lobes have truncate beaks (versus attenuate). U. grandiflora (and probably congeners) have had some medicinal use in native traditions (e.g. Smith 1923-33), but there has been little to no modern investigation of such uses. Uvularia does produce colchicine or similar phenethylisoquinoline alkaloids, as do other genera in Colchicaceae (Vinnersten & Larsson 2010).
