This largely northeastern taxon differs little from blanda, and it has not been distinguished in some recent treatments (e.g. Cr; McKinney in J). V. incognita differs from blanda as follows (W): leaves glabrous or sparsely to densely hirsute (versus glabrous except for scattered hairs on upper surface); largest blades typically obtuse to rounded at apex (versus abruptly acute), inner edges of basal lobes well separated or divergent in life (versus close or overlapping), sinus > 1/4 and often > 1/3 length of blade (versus < 1/4), margins low-serrate with noticeable teeth (versus shallowly crenate); petioles and peduncles not reddish (versus red-tinged or -spotted); lateral petals bearded (versus glabrous); cleistogamous capsules 7-14 mm long (versus 6.5-8 mm); seeds 1.6-2.2 × 1.0-1.3 mm (versus 1.2-1.3 × 0.7-0.8 mm), light to medium brown (versus blackish-brown; V. incognita usually occurs in somewhat open areas with more moisture stresses (hydric or xeric), especially at lower elevation, while blanda is largely restricted to mesic woods, especially at high elevation (F, W). In Ky. colls. have been reported from EDMO (Lix #414 at US) and perhaps elsewhere (Russell 1965), but these records remain dubious (M).
