Santalaceae <Comandreae> Comandra umbellata (richardsiana)
Comandra umbellata (L.) Nutt.
ALI: no HAB: 11,7,10,12, ::?, C, 4 ABU: g10?, s9?, -2
Typical umbellata occurs widely dry open woods and grassland transitions across eastern states, except on the Coastal Plain. However, it is generally infrequent to absent on the landscape. Data of Anderson et al. (2001) suggests a sensitivity to browsing by deer. Most colls. in Ky. match C. richardsiana Fern., which is now generally combined; colls. from CART (KY) and MCRE (B) match typical umbellata. The treatment of F deserves further evaluation; he indicated that richardsiana has a corymbose inflorescence (versus paniculate), with strongly ascending branches, and is perhaps typical of more calcareous soils in its largely midwestern range (versus largely Appalachian).
