Both species differ from frankii (and aureolensis) as follows (FNA 23): terminal spike proximally pistallate, distally staminate (versus all staminate); pistillate scales with short awns or awnless, completely hidden by perigynia (versus long-awned); achenes 2-3 mm (versus 1.2-2.1 mm).
