Mapping here is provisional. This southern Appalachian taxon appears to be locally frequent in the Big South Fork corridor (MCRE), and there are scattered records elsewhere in southeastern counties. Further comparison with flexicaulis is needed to clarify the status of some plants. S. flaccidifolia is a polyploid (2n = ?36, 54) that appears generally intermediate between flexicaulis and curtisii, and possibly of hybrid origin. Some outlying records may be confused with forms of those two species, especially robust plants of curtisii and the "Appalachian variant" of flexicaulis.
