This largely southeastern annual diploid (2n = 16) is closely relative to the more widespread palustris. It is less weedy and tends to occur on wetter, muddier sites. Without flowers or fruits, distinction from palustris may still be possible: plants are "glabrous throughout" versus "sometimes hirsute" on lower leaf surfaces and stems.
