This is a widespread eastern annual, especially on xeric, sterile, acid substrates, but also spreading locally onto disturbed ground. See further notes under drummondii; 2n = 24 in both species according to N. Robson (FNA 6), but Matsk et al. (2003) have also reported 2n = 18 for gentianoides.
