This occurs mostly in southcentral states from c. Tex. to Mo., but there appear to be native populations in Ala., Tenn. and Ky. In Ky., the species is known from scattered sites within or near former glades and barrens, mostly in western regions on base-rich soils. The easternmost plants, in LINC (APSC. KY) north of Crab Orchard, occur on roadsides and in obvious grassland remnants (E. Hartowicz, pers. comm.).
