This is most common in or near the Blue Ridge and Cumberland Mountains, typically in forest gaps on mesic slopes, but there are scattered localities elsewhere in Appalachian regions (FNA 3). There is virtually no overlap in range with tomentosa, but identifications need checking in areas of potential contact.
