This octoploid (2n = 52) spring annual (flowering mostly Apr-May in Ky.) is a widespread native weed in temperate regions of North and South America, with var. peregrina predominant in most of the range. Early after settlement in Ky., it was "abundant in gardens and cultivated fields" (Short 1828-29).
