This occurs mostly in the lower Mississippi Valley and Gulf Coastal Plain, usually in swampy alluvial woods (FNA 23, K). It is similar to festucacea and brevior, but distinct in its perigynia, which are finely gradular-papillose, with reniform-orbicular bodies that have width ca. 3.5-4.5 mm (versus 1.5-3.2 mm) and l/w ca. 0.6-0.9 (versus 1.5--1.7); 2n = 80. The only record from Ky. is a coll. from CALL (MUR), det. by A. Reznicek (see also, McKinney et al. 2000): J. Grubbs #1366, 23 May 1989, Shannon Creek embayment, Fort Heiman, wooded floodplain, dense canopy.
