This is a horticultural hybrid, usually represented in North America by a single pistillate clone (FNA 7). It can be aggressively persistent through root sprouts, but its status in Ky. needs further study. P. X canescens can be distinguished from alba by its leaves (Cr, W), which are less lobed on vigorous shoots (merely toothed versus 3-7-palmate), and less hairy when mature (glabrescent versus white-tomentose).
