Asteraceae <Heliantheae> Heliopsis helianthoides var. scabra
Heliopsis helianthoides (L.) Sweet var. scabra (Dunal) Fern.
ALI: no HAB: f-10,12?, n/a, D, 4 ABU: g9, s7?, -4
This largely midwestern taxon intergrades with the more eastern var. helianthoides in Ky. and elsewhere (FNA 21). Colls. from CHRI (B, APSC), GRAY (R. Seymour), HART (P. Measle), LOGA (WKY) and perhaps elsewhere do appear relatively distinct in their narrow, scabrous leaves. However, other colls. appear intermediate. Typical var. scabra differs as follows (W): leaves mostly 2-3.5 cm wide (versus 4.5-6 cm), moderately to densely scabrous on both sides (versus glabrous or sparsely pubescent below or scabrid above); stem scabrous with short, broad-based hairs (versus glabrous to slightly pubescent with slender ascending hairs), usually not glaucous (versus glaucous in lower part).
